The telephone is one of the most important inventions in human history. It has allowed people to communicate with each other in real-time other over vast distances. Both landline telephones and cellular phones are used by billions of people every day around the planet. However, before someone can use a telephone, he must first sign up for telephone service. Phone service can be quite costly depending on the terms of the service contract and the number of calls made per month. Most telephone service providers, including landline service companies, require their customers to buy a phone as a part of the service contract.

However, an alternative to regular phone service is available called Voice over IP (VoIP) that offers comparable features of regular phone service including a fax number at a lower cost. VoIP is a set of communication protocols and transmission technologies that enables voice communication over the Internet. Therefore, if you have Internet access, you can use VoIP service to talk to other people with your computer. The service requires the speed of a broadband Internet connection to work effectively.

VoIP service does not require a telephone like regular phone service, you can use your computer’s microphone and speakers. A VoIP user can make calls to a landline phone, cellular phone or another VoIP user. Many VoIP providers allow users to call each other for free, regardless of their geographic location. Additionally, the fee charged for calling long distance numbers or other countries is considerably lower than a traditional phone service. Unlike regular phone service, VoIP also has a number of extra features that are provided at no extra charge, such as caller ID, call waiting, conference calling and voicemail. These services can incur an extra charge at a regular service provider.

Because VoIP service is an Internet-related service, anyone who calls a VoIP number is not charged a long distance rate if the number is a local number, despite the geographic location of the person who has the service. Signing up for VoIP service is a comparable alternative to regular phone service which can save you money.
